Issues Facing the Transgender Community
In the last ten years much progress has been made regarding the transgender community. There is more awareness than ever and even representation in popular media such as actress Laverne Cox, actor Elliot Page, and Youtuber NikkiTutorials. Just recently the ban of transgender people in the military was reversed. While all of these are good things, the work is nowhere near done. There are many issues facing the transgender community today. Some of these issues include mental health, economics, healthcare, discrimination, and safety. The transgender community needs support from allies to fight for the right to be who they are and be treated equally.
Many of the issues facing the community come down to discrimination. Transgender people, especially those of color, are disproportionately affected by discrimination. They are often discriminated against by health care professionals, resulting in improper care and a higher rate of health issues. Housing and workplace discrimination are unfortunately also common for transgender people. They are also more likely to live in poverty and face homelessness, which can be tied back to workplace discrimination. Verbal and sexual harassment are also large issues, with almost 50% of transgender people facing some form of harassment in their lives. Suicide and murder are also issues the community face, with 44 murders in 2020 and over 40% reporting having attempted suicide. There is also proposed legislation that directly infringes on transgender people's rights, such as preventing them from using the bathroom for the gender they identify with.
These statistics are alarming, and show the true inequality transgender people face every day in America. While awareness is higher than before, there is still a lack of understanding and compassion within the country. Transgender people are entitled to proper healthcare, a steady income, and safety. Until these rights are no longer threatened, no longer questioned, people need to continue fighting for the transgender community.
